Zitat des Tages/Truman Capote starb heute vor 25 Jahren

August 25, 2009

I met Capote in 1970, at a party given by George Plimpton, a well-known editor and writer, in Plimpton’s Manhattan apartment overlooking the East River . Plimpton’s parties always attracted many famous people, but when Truman entered, they made way for him, as if he were a movie star. And in a way he was, easily the most famous writer in America . It was two years later, however, in 1972, that I really got to know him. I was doing a series of profiles of famous writers—Gore Vidal, P. G. Wodehouse, Vladmir Nabokov, and Allen Ginsberg, among them. When my profile of Truman appeared, a publisher asked me to write his biography. I called Truman to see if he would cooperate. He thought for thirty seconds and said: “Sure.”
